Originally the foundation of the Segovian Professor of Medicine Pedro González de Velasco, it was created to house with dignity in a building his unique anatomy and natural history collection, achieved after forty years of “constant studies, fruitful practice and an unceasing ambition for the benefit of medical sciences”. His collection is made up of numerous pieces representing the primitive cultures of the five continents and an excellent library containing ethnological and anthropological subjects. Under the name of the Anthropological Museum of Dr. González de Velasco, it was inaugurated by Alfonso XII on April 29, 1875, in a building designed by the architect Francisco de Cubas.
